Carnival 360 Full Edition

The Toronto Lime 360 video blog from carnival stayed unupdated all from J'ouvert. That’s normal during Carnival, nothing get done.. Its some serious liming time.. But after carnival was over it just disappeared from the front page and never got updated. I looked for it and now I found it here.

The days from 9-13 are now online. It’s the best carnival documentary I seen so far. I bought the Inside Carnival 2k7 too, but it’s too much interviews away from the carnival and the presenter is too much. It’s like she is angry or something.

DJ Playhouse hosting 360 and living in Canada does it excellent for Toronto Lime. He has the right style and sound sooo authentic.. (OOOOOh GOOOOOOD) ;)

Hopefully I can get it on DVD soon. It’s a bit low resolution online.

Link: TNT Carnival videoblog 360

Beware: You going to get some stong withdraw feelings when watching it. I cyan wait until 2k9 when we all going...

Reggae from Southside

Post Carnival means for a lot of people Reggae. Here is a new tune from Southside and Mastamind Productions.

Here is some Bio bout the artist:
"We need to appreciate our women" they said "that is why we wrote this song for every mother, wife, grandmother, girlfriend, sister, daughter, auntie, to let them know that we know and appreciate their worth" This was response when the group Southside was asked about there latest single "Empress"

Keston Harris and Kwasi Jones are two young warriors hailing from Marabella, Trinidad going by the name Southside. They grew up listening to a variety of music but soca reggae and calypso inspired them the most, and after migrating to the United States at 12 and13 respectively, it is not surprising that they started pursuing music.

Kwasi Jones now known to many as Kemau, started singing while attending San Fernando Boys RC, Trinidad where he was a member of the choir , after migrating to the US, he continued singing while in High school and would participate in many talent shows and competitions. In 2005 he recorded his first soca song entitled Wuk It and then followed up with his first reggae recording entitled "Open your eyes and was blessed with the opportunity to perform at the prestigious Newark Symphony Hall.

Keston Harris or Kes as he is called by his friends grew up listening to the songs of Black Stalin, Lord Kitchener, Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff. He would spend many summers at his Grandmothers house in 5th Company Village, Moruga with his cousins singing and writing. So inspired was he that at age 11 he took part in a calypso competition at Marabella Boys Anglican primary school, as he tells it , he didn't win but that encouraged him to pursue music even more.

Keston and Kwasi, although they were childhood friends came together to form the group Southside in 2006. They chose this name because they are both from the south of Trinidad. Since then they have done numerous shows throughout New Jersey and New York, opening for Machel Montano HD, Mr. Vegas and Sanchez. There latest release Empress is the second of many soulful tracks to be released by this duo. On this track they teamed up with ace producer and music composer Shawn "Da Ma$tamind" Noel of Ma$tamind Productions.
Listen!! Southside is coming to radio station near you.

KMC and Shabba

One of my favorite soca artist is KMC. Ever since his song "Rolling Back" together with Jungle & "Mr Adams Daughter" on the album "Checkmate" I have been hook. I believe that KMC don’t get so much exposure that he should in Trinidad.

I think KMC came with some strong nice songs this year. He released this song together with Shabba Ranks. It’s called "Born As A Winner" and it’s a groovy positive tune. Shabba drops some nice nice rhymes on this one...
Listen here:

Download here.

KMC has also this big song out with video and all:

KMC - Carnival Clap

A couple more songs from KMC this carnival; First "Wild West", where he comparing Trinidad to the lawless Wild West. And that’s true sometime, more than one person get murder every day the year thru the year in Tnt, and that’s with a population of little bit more of a million... Plus kidnaps of successful persons are increasing were the relative have to pay up with millions of dollars.

KMC - Wild West

Second, THIS TUNE ROCKS!!! MADMADMADMADMADMADMADMADMAD!
This tune is MAAAAD!
Listen here:

Cupid Featuring KMC - Mad Again

and a Interview with Bunji Garlin & Faye Ann Lyons at Soca Monarch

International Soca Monarch Results

Yesterday was the International Soca Monarch 2008. Unfortenly there was no live broadcast because of copyrights issues. But here are the results:

Groovy Soca
1 - 266 - Shurwayne Winchester (Carnival please stay)
2 - 262 - Patrice Roberts (More Wuk)
3 - 261 -Shal Marshall & Kerwin Dubois (Gal Farm)
4 - Farmer Nappy (Own Woman)

Power Soca
1 - ? - Bunji Garlin (Fiery)
2 - 257 - Neil 'The Boss' George (Over yuh head)
3 - 254 - Fay Ann Lyons-Alvarez (Get On
4 - 250 - Nadia Batson (My Posse)

From C tnt World.

So Bunji and Shurwayne were the winners, no surprise there. A big surprise would be if someone outside had taken the title, or even placed in the top four. As some know its a lot of politics in the Soca business, especially in Trinidad. Some mayor players are really controlling the scene. I think this will hit back in Trinidad in the long run, and I believe it already has. The songs for BIM, SVG and Spice Mas and the rest of the island for last year are stronger then the trini for this year...

2 x Anthony B

I saw that Anthony B is in Trinidad for the Carnival. He was interviewed on Synergy the other night together with Farmer Nappy. I had a hard time recognize him even if I have more then 3 cds with him. His is the best reggae artist in my book and he is not the only Jamaican star that is on the island right now. Macka D was on the show before and I heard that Sean Paul made a quick stop too. Some people think it’s to much Jamaican culture in Soca right now. There are Jamaican dances in the videos and flag waving and all the remixes by JA artists.

I personally don’t think it’s a problem, more a possibility. All over the world reggae has gone big, even so big that like some in the Swedish reggae scene don’t think they have anything to do with Jamaica anymore. Well hope we never go that for with Soca, its important to know where you come from. But Soca can defiantly need to get a push overseas. When the people who love Anthony, Sean, Shaggy and the other artist, see that they big up the soca artist maybe they get curious and start to explore. The culture in Caribbean is really the same culture, just different flavours.

Because remember that even if the Soca scene is alive in places in NYC and UK it hasn’t really gone outside its group, its still mostly immigrants from the islands that supporting the music. It need to crossover to the other groups in respective country.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to see Soca blog up and be the new trend, trends always die. But I would like to see it established in everybody’s head, so at least people now what it is (which they don’t do now) and so the artists can do more extensive touring in Europe and beyond.

If you are in Sweden the 16/2 be sure to go to our fete and here the sweet riddims of Soca and Dancehall mix...

Here is two songs with Antony B:
First we got Bunji Garlin feat Anthony in the tune "Your Body Gal".
This one has a more dancehall feeling to it. Listen here:

Bunji feat Anthony B - Your Body Gal
Download Here.

Next out is Farmer Nappy, Farmer was (is?) the backup singer for Machel, and he is now pursuing his own career. It going rather good, this tune has really has the island locked last year. I read a Swedish girls travel diary on the net and she said she really grown in love with this one. It’s not my Farmer favourite, that the tune Granny. That one is the bomb. This is the remix featuering Anthony B.
