The Caribbean Dream EP

Soca music has just been shifted into a gear now called “hyper-soca-matic”. This is all due to Montserrat soca artist Scrappy. Scrappy has for the third year managed to give the soca arena a next reason to keep their ears open and give space to this young vibrant soca act. Scrappy’s summer release “Start To Bounce” produced by fellow Montserratian producer/artist “SocaChild” has been the heat and energy of one of the world’s most diverse and multicultural carnivals, London’s Nottinghill Carnival. Also look out for the smooth silky groovy soca track title “Be Mine” also produced by “SocaChild” and the club banger “Take This Wine” featuring Blee. Scrappy has now finished recording a new EP titled “The Caribbean Dream” which is scheduled for availability in digital download format in January 2009. Kenneth Salick

This year, just as last year, has had numerous opinions about the politics of carnival titles. Suspicions of bias judges and bribes has been debated. Kevin M Mack proposed in the Trinidad Guardian to implement the same voting system for road march as in the Chutney Monarch. In the Chutney Monarch you can send in your votes with text messages. I don´t know if it´s best practises but it´s an interesting idea.

About the Soca Monarch Results 2009

Ive watched almost the whole show yesterday and i think Shurwayne should at least place in the power category. But i guess they rob her for her price last year so they wanted to give some back this year.

In my oppionon was the best performance made by Destra as the half time act together with Alision Hinds and Saucy.

The band was also a disappointment, the sounded real off when they should play any other island then Trinidad. Did they not rehearse or was it planned?? It would be better to have a DJ back the foreign artists.

And the celebrity judges was real out of time, they admitted they didn't know shit about soca and went home just after the Power competition started. I hope they didn't pay then any money...

Soca Monarch 2009

Today (Friday) its soca monarch in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Its a big competition with a first price over 1 000 000 dollar TT. But I don't feel its the best song that always win, instead there is a lot of politics going on. Its still worth watching or going thou. When i was there last time, there was all inclusive beer, thats unlimited beers, and for like 100 TT. This year they bringing in celebrity judges to make it look better, but what does Danny Glover really know about soca?

When you hear anything about Haiti in Europe and Sweden its usually bad news, and thats sad coz I'm sure there are good things going down there that they don't report. Just look at these 2009 Carnival videos and its seems not to be all bad. Hopefully we will also get some positive news from the island. Their carnival as at the same time as Trini Carnival. KMC Launches New Website

One of my favorite artist is KMC. He has really come back this year after being out in the cold after some bacchanal with Chinese Laundry. He had good tunes out last year too, but they never got any airplay and he didn't get booked to many shows. This year its different, with the tune Am Not Drunk he put the standard for soca for 2009.

Bio:
Shirlan G aka Skinny Banton, born in Trinidad in the West Indies. The artiste now resides in Carriacou Grenada. Skinny Banton started singing from the age of 12 years old. He entered a singing competition at school and won. He continued write and sing, this led to him performing his songs as a support artist throughout the Caribbean. Skinny first came to light supporting Marlon Asher "The Ganja Famer" on stage at the After Ours night club in Carriacou in 2005. Since then Skinny Banton supported artists such as Bunji Garlin, Baby Killa, Hasty Killa, Richie Spice, I-Sasha, Prophet Benjamin and more. As an unsigned talent, Skinny Banton started to put out more tracks arena as a artist in 2005 with hit tracks Mek A Deal, Juvenile, More Gyal, Fire Pon Satan and Nuff Ganja Tree. In 2006 has songs such as One Family (2006), which are popular amongst his fans, djays and sound systems. It was during his appearance in Carriacou, Skinny was approached by UK Homegrown Ltd and invited to do some vocals on UK Homegrown tracks in England to which he accepted. Although it took a while to take up the offer, Skinny finally made it to England late September 2007 and headed straight for UK Homegrown's studio. Following Skinny Banton's musical journey with UK Homegrown Simon Big Tune Benjamin and LWay Productions, Skinny headed back to Carriacou with more experience under his belt. In 2008 Skinny Banton continued his success with tracks such as Gangsta Soca and ‘Horn for you’ which has been a huge success overseas. These tracks gained Skinny Banton more fans in Carriacou and also in the UK. Skinny also appears on the network Riddum alongside Papa Gerry and Tallpree with the hot track ‘Work up your waist’ which has eased him into performing with artists from Grenada. Skinny Banton has started his 2009 season with a track entitled ‘No War’ and has teamed up with UK’s Iron Fist productions on their Caribbean Unity Riddum with a track called ‘Drunk again’ out in Feb 2009. Skinny Banton's favourite artist of all time is Sizzla. Skinny thanks Sizzla’s music for providing the inspiration for him to sing and Bunji Garlin for encouraging him in his music.
