Happy Independence

Today Barbados are celebrating its national day. In Sweden we don't have a national day, we only have a flag day and we only had it like a holiday for a year or two.
I guess the situation is very different in Barbados and more like the other Caribbean countries. Barbados got its independence from the United Kingdom 30 November 1966. So its a very young nation, only 42 years old.

Bajantube is a Youtube-copy from Barbados and they celebrating with playing only Bajan music all day!

Bajantube would to like to wish you, its members a fantastic Independence Day and as a special 42nd birthday gift, we will be treating you to 100% Bajan music all day long!!!!

Black Stalin have to have the most cool artist name ever. He has now been awarded a honour Doctorate from The University of the West Indies. Check the video from one of his performance at the end. I think the calypsoians have the biggest stages for a one man show ever, and the longest mic cord...

Black Stalin gets Doctorate from University
Trinidad: Black Stalin has joined calypsoian such as Chalkdust & Mighty Sparrow that can say they are doctors of their craft. The University of the West Indies gave an honorary doctorate to Black Stalin. Tropicalfete.com congrats Black Stalin on his achievement.

Ipred or the pirates of Scandinavia

In Sweden right now it’s a big debate about file sharing. The record companies want to get the rights similar to the police so they can follow up and investigate leads about possible file sharing. A lot of Swedes don’t like to put these types of rights to private companies so they can use mafia methods and extort normal people who share files without commercial interests, something over government promised us when they come to power.
The rest of this message will be in Swedish and how to help stop the new law:

Hej!

As you might know Trinidad Carnival is coming up. Songs has already dropped and mas band start preparing. 2009 is going to be a very special carnival coz my dear friend Racia has finally made it in to the business. She and her friends are presenting a carnival section called Golden Brown Sugar! The section is in the new band Wee International. Here is some info from there webpage: http://www.weeint.com/

Born out of the desire to re-introduce the family vibe to Carnival,Wee was created. Wee International a group of foreign and local-based Trinbagonians joined forces to bring back that down home, family vibes of a West Indian love affair we have known to be Carnival.

Having witnessed the changes over the years, in attitudes and behaviors to what Carnival represents Wee welcomes the challenge to expose the masses to the true meaning of Carnival and what Wee know CARNIVAL to be.

Wee are dedicated to giving the individual masquerader that personalized experience, through an intimate small band.

Wee are the alternative to the big band, big market oriented environment, with quality to match and in some instances surpass, as all our costumes are being assembled in Trinidad by individuals with years of experience in mas productuction techniques

Wee will be featuring – everything (well... everything, except the kitchen sink) to make your time with family and quality friends a blast!

All inclusive:
- Unlimited drinks (beverages, premium drinks)
- Food
- A-Class security

TNT Soca Monarch Renews Itself

International Soca Monarch that's held in Trinidad every year has before got a lot of criticism because of the non-existing rules and bias judges. New they going to shape up and hopefully this can bring more credit to the show. I don't know how good idea it is to bring celebrity judges thou.

Update: Yes, it's Danny Glover from films like Lethal Weapon and Predator 2 whos heading the celebraty judges panel. "I am Danny Glover and I am soca."

Finalists of the 2009 International Soca Monarch (Power) competition will have to deliver million, dollar performances to cop the championship on February 20 when it comes off at either the National Stadium or Queen's Park Oval.

At the October 29 launch of the competition at the Oval, Caribbean Prestige Foundation executive president Gregory Fernandez announced that the purse for the 2009 International Power Soca Monarch and Groovy Soca Monarch was in excess of $3 million. The winner of the Power Soca category will receive $1 million. The first prize of the Groovy category has not yet been announced, but Fernandez said he is aiming at it being $500,000 in 2010.

Several changes have been made to the format of the competition, including the use of one band only for the finals. After consultation with regular participants in the competition the decision was made that although all competitors will have to perform accompanied by the band provided by CPF, each act will be allowed two of its own musicians.

The musicians will be required to rehearse with the house band and there will be at least one mandatory full dress rehearsal prior to the final. Fernandez said this move is part of a series of moves towards tightening the production, which is scheduled to be broadcast worldwide across 31 territories, including other Caribbean islands, North America and Britain. The show will also be seen on the Internet on a pay-per-view basis.

Winners of soca monarch competitions in the other islands during this year have been seeded into the final of the International Soca Monarch. Thus far four of these acts, including Claudette Peters of Antigua, Skinny Fabulous of St Vincent, have been seeded into the 2009 finals of the International Soca Monarch. Fernandez said competitors will have to adhere to the stringent performance duration and presentation rules as the show can only run for three and a half hours in keeping with the broadcast requirements.

Calling on the corporate sector as well as the Ministry of Culture to get involved in the production of the competition that is now in its 17th year, Fernandez said to produce the event in 2009 will cost $14 million. The expenditure will go towards fees, transportation and accommodation for a number of Hollywood celebrities and international recording artistes who will be coming to be a part of a celebrity panel at the show.

Leading this panel is Danny Glover who sent a recorded message confirming that he is on board the project and stating, "I am Danny Glover and I am soca." Fernandez said the other member of this celebrity panel will be revealed in the coming months. The judging panel will consist of five judges from the other islands and three from Trinidad. The highest and lowest scores will be knocked out and the remaining scores totalled.
